Thomas Debois currently works as a PhD Student under the supervision of Elwys De Stefani and Lorenza Mondada at the Department of Linguistics at KU Leuven, Belgium. In his analyses of the openings of (multilingual) encounters between unacquainted individuals at tourism offices, he tries to examine the relationship between language choice and categorization. For this purpose, the conceptual framework of conversation analysis and ethnomethodology (EMCA) is used. Through his analyses of both audio and video recordings, he seeks to examine why people would use certain languages at particular moments, and how others react to it. Thus, he attempts to contribute to the study of interactional openings, as well as that of multilingualism in daily life.
